NJ Summer Biathlon Race

The 2008 Summer Biathlon season continued today as 42 athletes competed in the New Jersey Summer Biathlon at the Cherry Ridge Range.

Christina Waggoner of New Jersey and David Greenberg of New York won the women’s and men’s sport class races, respectively. Waggoner recorded five penalties on the sport targets set at 25m. While Greenberg recorded just three penalties in capturing the men’s title.

Erin Graham of Vermont won the women’s match class race with just two penalties (both in the standing position). This was her first summer biathlon race since the 2006/2007 season, during which she represented the United States in both the Summer and Winter World Championships. Graham covered the course 72 seconds faster than Maryland’s Patricia Zerfaz, who recorded 8 penalties. Zerfas represented the United State at last year’s Summer World Championships. Pennsylvania’s Jeanice Naulty finished third and New Jersey’s Chris Rogers (the race director) finished fourth.

Pennsylvania’s Doug Hoover and Alden Sims went 1-2 in the men’s match class race, respectively, while New Jersey’s Joe Iwan finished third. Sims was last year’s junior national champion and fourth place overall finisher in the world championship trials.

Results from April 19th Whitetail Preserve Race

The 2008 summer biathlon season got underway on Saturday, April 19 with the first race of the season at the Whitetail Preserve in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. This is the same venue that will host the 2008 USBA Summer Biathlon National Championships and World Championship Team Trials on July 17-20.

39 athletes competed in four races in this weekend’s event. The sport class races saw Tom Smith of Scranton, PA and Helen Evans of Drums, PA winning their respective races. In the match class races, Joe Iwan of Garfield, NJ and Pat Zerfas of Kensington, MD won the men’s and women’s races. The complete results for the race can be found on the Results page

Summer Biathlon Nationals

Summer Biathlon Nationals will be July 17-20. The official training day will be Thursday the 17th, and the events will be on Friday the 18th to Sunday the 20th.
